Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Fairfax Owner’s Guide

Copperfield chimney cap installation in Fairfax typically runs $230 to $480 depending on cap size, mounting hardware condition, and roof access. We stock Copperfield-compatible caps and mounting components on the truck, so most installations happen the same day we show up. The usual call starts the same way: a homeowner notices water staining on the ceiling near the flue, or rain spatter inside the firebox, or a cap that simply is not there anymore after a good windstorm came through Fairfax last spring.

Call (571) 624-2385

What you are actually dealing with is usually one of three things: a cap that corroded through at the mesh, a cap that lifted off in high wind because the mounting screws backed out, or a cap that was never sized right for the flue tile in the first place. All three are fixable without replacing the whole chimney. We are going to cover what you need to know before you spend a dollar.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes caps in two main lines: their standard single-flue caps with expanded metal mesh and their multi-flue caps that sit over a full chimney crown. Within those lines, sizes run from 8×8 to 17×17 for single-flue, and multi-flue comes in widths from 30 to 72 inches. Here is the compatibility gotcha most Fairfax homeowners hit: Copperfield single-flue caps are built around outside-mount brackets, which means they fit flue tiles measuring roughly 8×8 through 13×13 on the outside. If your flue has a poured concrete crown that comes right up to the tile edge, you need the inside-mount version or a crown-mount adapter, and not every Copperfield cap sold online makes that clear.

When you are looking at a Copperfield cap that is already on the roof, the model will be stamped on the underside of the base plate or on the mounting bracket. You will need a ladder and five minutes to check it, or you can grab the model from the original paperwork if you kept it. If neither works, measure the outside of the flue tile, not the inside opening. We have watched homeowners order caps based on the inner dimension and get a unit that will not clamp on. As far as OEM versus aftermarket: Copperfield’s OEM caps use a 24-gauge stainless steel hood but galvanized mesh on their more affordable lines, and that mesh is the thing that rusts out first. A quality aftermarket cap with 304 stainless mesh and a stainless base runs about the same price as the Copperfield OEM mid-tier and usually outlasts it in Fairfax’s wet winters. We install both and will tell you straight which one makes sense for your roof.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water inside the firebox after rain. The most obvious. On a Copperfield cap, this is almost always the mesh corroding through and letting rain fall straight down, or the base gasket flattening out. The hood itself rarely fails.
  • Rust streaks on the chimney crown or siding. Galvanized mesh rusts, and rain carrying that rust stains whatever is below it. If you see orange-brown streaks running off the cap, the mesh is done. The cap is still doing some work, but not for long.
  • The cap is missing or tilted. Fairfax gets real wind off the Blue Ridge in spring and fall. A Copperfield cap held on by two self-tapping screws into old mortar will back out over time. If it is tilted, the clamp is loose. If it is gone, it is probably in the yard somewhere.
  • You hear the cap rattling in the wind. Copperfield caps are bolt-clamped, so a rattle means the clamp has loosened or the base plate no longer sits square on the tile. The fix is a re-level and re-torque, which takes about 20 minutes if the base is still sound.
  • Birds or squirrels are getting in. This is a mesh problem again. Once the mesh pulls away from the base or rusts through, the gap is big enough for a squirrel. Fairfax has plenty of them, and they do not leave quietly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fairfax, you are looking at the following installed ranges for Copperfield chimney cap installation:

  • Single-flue cap, stock Copperfield or equivalent: $230 to $320 installed. Includes removing the old cap, cleaning the flue tile edge, setting the new cap square, and torquing the clamps.
  • Single-flue cap, larger custom size or stainless mesh upgrade: $320 to $410 installed. Same labor, better materials. The $90 difference is the cap itself.
  • Multi-flue cap over an existing concrete crown: $410 to $480 installed. More hardware, more ladder time, more measuring. Price depends on crown width.

The price you get from Top Hat Chimney includes the part, the mounting, the trip to your Fairfax home, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. No trip charge inside our service county. Wendell Pike gives you the number on the phone before a single tool comes off the truck. If the old cap is still intact, we will show you exactly why it failed before we quote a replacement, and if it can be re-secured instead of replaced, that is what we will recommend. We are one of the few shops in Fairfax that stocks Copperfield-compatible bases and clamps as separate pieces, so sometimes the fix is a $40 clamp instead of a $280 cap.

DIY or Call Us?

Short version: checking it is safe. Replacing it is not, for most Fairfax homeowners.

What you can do yourself: get a ladder, set it on level ground, and take photos of the cap from the roofline, or use a drone if you have one. Check for rust at the mesh, check whether the cap sits level, and look at the clamp bolts. That is all useful information for us when you call.

What goes wrong with DIY on this job: chimney caps are worked on at the roofline, often on a slope, and you need both hands to seat the base and torque the clamp. If you lose your footing, it is a fall. And Copperfield caps are clamped to the flue tile with mechanical pressure. Set the clamp too loose and the cap sails off in the next storm. Set it too tight and the flue tile cracks. We have replaced more than one tile after a well-meaning homeowner got rough with a ratchet. Wendell and his crew do this part of the job on ladders and ridges every week. If you are not comfortable up there, call (571) 624-2385 and we will come look at it. The estimate is free.
