Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two liner lines you are most likely to find in Fairfax homes: the standard 316L stainless liner and the heavier 316Ti titanium-stabilized version. Most pre-2010 installations used the 316L. The Ti upgrade became more common after that, especially for oil and gas conversions. The compatibility question that actually matters is diameter and length, not just brand name. A Gelco liner is sized to the appliance: 4-inch for many gas inserts, 5.5- and 6-inch for wood stoves, and 6-, 7-, or 8-inch for open fireplaces. Measure the inside diameter of your existing liner if you can, and count the vertical run from the appliance collar to the chimney crown. That tells us what to order before we ever set foot on the roof.

We stock their liners because we’ve installed enough of them to trust the metal, but we also keep DuraFlex and HeatShield products on the truck for cases where a different spec fits better. If your flue tile is in decent shape and only the Gelco liner has failed, we’d typically recommend a direct Gelco-compatible replacement. If the surrounding masonry has shifted or the flue tile is gone, we may suggest a heavier liner or a poured-in-place option. We’ll show you the camera footage either way.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Rust flakes or metallic debris in the firebox. This is the one we see most in Fairfax. The liner’s inner wall has begun to corrode, usually from condensation that never fully dried during our humid summers. Small flakes are the first sign; larger sections mean the liner wall is thinning fast.
• Discoloration or staining on the chimney exterior. When a liner fails, moisture and combustion byproducts can work their way into the surrounding masonry. You may see dark streaks or a damp-looking patch on the brick that wasn’t there a year ago, especially after heavy rain.
• A smell like damp campfire or sulfur when the fire is cold. A failed liner can’t contain the flue gases the way it should, and those gases sit against the masonry. On humid mornings in Fairfax, that smell gets noticeably worse.
• Visible cracks or separation at the liner seams. If you can see the liner from the roof or through the cleanout, look for vertical hairline cracks or a seam that’s opened slightly. Gelco liners are welded, so a seam gap means structural failure, not normal wear.
• Carbon monoxide detector activations during fireplace use. This one is serious. If your CO detector has gone off while the fireplace was burning, stop using it immediately and call us. A failed flue liner can absolutely allow carbon monoxide into the house.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can absolutely check your own liner for rust flakes in the firebox, visible cracks from the roof or cleanout, and any staining on the brick. Those are safe, useful checks. What you should not do is climb onto a steep Fairfax roofline, pull a chimney crown, or attempt to extract and replace a stainless liner yourself. A liner that’s partially collapsed can bind badly on the way out, and the tension involved can make it snap loose suddenly.
