HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild in Fairfax: What to Know First

We provide independent HeatShield chimney liner and rebuild work throughout Fairfax, with most liner replacements completed in a single day once we’ve got the right parts on hand. A HeatShield ceramic liner repair typically runs $250 to $750; a full rebuild with a new stainless liner lands between $3,800 and $8,500 depending on flue height, access, and how much masonry has let go. You’ll get an exact number before any tool comes off the truck, and if it doesn’t need doing, Wendell will tell you that too.

This page is for Fairfax homeowners who already have a HeatShield product installed, or are weighing one against a stainless liner, and want straight answers on repair versus replacement. Call (571) 624-2385 and a live person picks up, day or night.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant - joint erosion at the first and second flue tile seams. The sealant bonds well to clean clay tile but starts spalling where Fairfax’s freeze-thaw cycle works water into the seam, then freezes and pries. We see this most in unlined chimneys from the 1960s and 70s around Mantua and Kings Park West. The fix is mechanical prep back to sound tile, then a fresh Cerfractory application, not another layer over the loose stuff.
  • HeatShield Joint Repair System - pinhole leaks where the old liner was already gone. When a clay tile liner has cracked or separated and the homeowner opted for joint repair rather than full relining, the weak point is the tile itself beside the repaired joint. In Fairfax’s wet winters, water finds those pinholes fast. We scope the flue, find the actual breach, and either re-treat the section or take the chimney to a full liner replacement if the tile bed is shot.
  • HeatShield CeCure Sleeve Relining - warping when the original flue is oversized. The sleeve system works, but if the existing flue runs 13×13 or bigger and the CeCure sleeve doesn’t seat tight against the old tile wall, it can shift under heat load. The symptom owners report is a faint rattle on windy days or a cooking smell in an upstairs room. We pull the sleeve, measure the true throat and flue dimensions, and reinstall with the correct standoff or move you to a properly sized stainless liner instead.
  • HeatShield resurfacing over a previously swept glaze - poor adhesion. Cerfractory won’t bond to third-degree creosote. Some homes in Fairfax got HeatShield treatments years ago without a proper glaze removal first, and the resurfacing starts flaking within two seasons. You can’t fix that by brushing; you have to strip to the substrate. We do that with a rotary chain system, then test adhesion before we apply anything new.
  • HeatShield hybrid installs with a stainless top section - dissimilar material movement. Where a stainless liner cap meets a Cerfractory-treated lower flue, the two materials expand and contract at different rates. Over five or six Fairfax winters, that junction loosens and starts pulling flue gases into the chase. We’ve pulled apart enough of these to know the fix is a proper high-temp transition plate, not caulk. If it’s on your chimney, we’ll show you the gap on camera before we touch it.

Our HeatShield Chimney Liner & Rebuild Process

Here’s how a typical HeatShield job goes with Wendell and his crew, from first call to final walkthrough:

  1. 1
Call and talk to a real person. You describe what you’re seeing or smelling. We ask about the age of the liner, the last sweep, and whether you’ve had any water in the firebox. We book a time and give you a real arrival window.
  2. 2
Camera inspection first, always. Wendell runs a camera the full length of the flue, interior and exterior if needed. You see the footage. You get the plain-English verdict: repair, sleeve, full liner, or leave it alone.
  3. 3
Parts decision. For HeatShield repairable sections, we use OEM HeatShield Cerfractory when the substrate is sound. When the damage is structural, we recommend the best fit: often a DuraFlex stainless liner, sometimes a Gelco product. We’ll tell you exactly why we’re recommending what we are.
  4. 4
The work itself. Prep, application or liner drop, then proper curing time if we’re using Cerfractory. We’re not rushing sealant. We protect the hearth and the roof, and we leave the yard the way we found it.
  5. 5
Post-work test and camera verification. We run the camera again and show you the finished flue. You see before and after. No guesswork.
  6. 6
90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If anything about the work isn’t right, one call brings us back at no additional cost. That’s stamped on every invoice.

Why Fairfax Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

Wendell Pike has been running a brush through Fairfax chimneys since 1999, and he’s looked at enough HeatShield failures to know them by smell and by sound before the camera ever goes up. That’s not a sales line; that’s two decades of being the guy neighbors ask about their flues over at the Government Center farmers market. Wendell has lived the trade since Palomar College, and he puts his name and license number on every job.

We’re an independent HeatShield service provider. We work on HeatShield products because plenty of Fairfax homes have them, but we’ll also install DuraFlex or Gelco when that’s the better fix for your chimney. The 90-Day Done Right Promise backs every single job in writing. If the work isn’t right, one call and we’re back. No argument, no invoice.

The number on the phone quote is the number on the invoice. The sweep who shows up is background-checked, uniformed, and calls if he’s running behind. We answer the phone around the clock because a cold house and a chimney problem don’t keep office hours. Ask anyone on your street.
